New Zipdisk mount error dialog
September 27, 2005Just apt-get dist-upgraded into Breezy, and it finally works. About time. Anyway, Gnome 2.12 is really nice, Beagle is working marvellously, and as you can see, I also encountered the new Zipdisk mount error dialog! The GNOME team delivered on their promise to make the Zipdisk mount error dialog even more user-friendly and HIG-compliant. Since the previous version didn’t contain any useful info anyway, they this time decided to discard of the info alltogether.
In GNOME 2.14, the Zipdisk mount error dialog will be removed completely, and replaced by a more user-friendly and more HIG-compliant PC speaker beep, and for Topaz, they plan to replace the PC speaker beep by a mallet that comes falling from the sky on top of your head.

I like this stuff more than your hate-America posts. :)

Everyone is free to write whatever they want in their blog, Tom. This is why it’s called a ‘personal blog’. If you only want to see a single side of Thom’s being and personality, that would be unfair to him. However, you are free to skip/ignore headlines that don’t represent you.

Your still using that zip drive? c’mon, move into the 20th century with the rest of us :-)

I never made any suggestion about changing what he writes… Feedback is about giving your opinion on the entry, silly.
Haha, that’s kind of what I was thinking when I read it. However, I can definitely understand where he’s coming from–from the entry it would appear that zip disk support isn’t even tested at this point. Thom, do you know if they’re actually working on fixing this stuff?

I think that this is a general mount error dialog, so not specific to Zip drives. Zip drives are supposed to be fully supported by the Linux kernel, but as you guessed, they rarely, if ever, work out-of-the-box. It takes quite some cli action to get them to work.
Leaving the external ones (got 4 of those too) out of the story here… They are even harder to get working… If they even can.

Tom, better hate than love the current America.
now on topic, GTK should see GNOME HIGness. and GNOME should either update their HIG or adhere.
GNOME HIG clearly states that Error Dialogs should not have a title. gtk’s MessageDialog add a title though by default and the whole mess continues

Bugzilla is the place for this.

You seem certain Gnome is to blame for the problem rather than it being in any way related to how Ubuntu handles drive mounting.
Completely missing text doesn’t look like a design error something else must have gone wrong. If you can get it fixed chances are the dialog will be using the same old text you didn’t like before. Still sucks though.
