January 28, 2006It’s really weird… You know, I’m listening to the Beach Boys right now, and it’s kind of odd to realize that the Beach Boys are generally considered the best band of all time. And my current song. “Good Vibrations”, the best song ever made. That just sends chills down my spine.
Personally, I like it, and I see the technical excellence of the song, the lyrics and especially the vocals (just astonoshing). And that goes for their entire repertoire.

As a musician myself, I agree with you on the technical merits of their music…it sounds deceptively simple but in reality is actually pretty tough stuff to play, let alone sing. It’s “feel good” music. The really interesting story about The Beach Boys is the story behind Brian Wilson though, wiki it when you get a chance (the irony is that he suffered from severe stage fright, which must absolutely suck for a musician, but thankfully he persevered), a great story.
Best band of all time? For some, maybe…but from a technical standpoint I consider Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Rush to be the clear winners in that area (though as a drummer, I’m biased as Bonham and Peart are widely recognized as the best drummers ever), namely due to the breadth/scope of their music, plus the sheer amount of music they’ve all made over 3+ decades each.

Well, I find the Beach Boys just a little TOO perfect. There simply isn’t a wrong note anywhere, everything has a purpose, every little bit of noise has its place. That’s really great, but it also makes it a little less spontanious.
My best band of all time is The Eagles.

I don’t have any favorite singer or group because there will always be a bunch of songs among their albums that I just don’t like. Of course, there are always “worse and better” artists than others, but I can’t single pinpoint one. Instead, I can talk about particular songs that I like that are usually produced by different artists in their hey-day.
The only album where I like all songs (not equally though) is M. Jackson’s “Thriller”. I think Billie Jean is one of the best songs ever written, and my measure for this is that I don’t get tired of it after having listened to it over 1000 times since 1983.
