They’re just like Oscars

Ok, the Grammy Commitee is now on my hit-list. They find Kelly fcuking Clarkson of greater value (check best pop vocal album) to music than Fiona Apple. I cannot take people like that seriously, I’m sorry. You see, what did Clarkson do? All the woman did was sing. Nothing more! Fiona writes and plays her music herself. Fiona Apple is someone who makes music for herself, and not because of the dollar signs.

It baffles me, really. I always thought the Grammies were something of value. Now, they’re just like Oscars.

  1. Well, if the prize category was for the “best pop vocal album”, it doesn’t matter who writes what and who sings it. It is about the best album, not about the best artist.

The meaning of the individual songs, and their combined value, is what makes an album either good or ungood. A song gets intrinsically more value and meaning if the person who sings it is actually the one who wrote it. It gives the song an extra layer of depth and comitment.

The Grammy committee have simply chosen the most successful of the albums– not the best. There is no way in hell that any sane music-loving person would choose Kelly Clarskon (who needed a cheesy TV show to break through) over heavyweights like Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, and Fiona Apple. It’s like comparing McDonald’s to a fancy crittically acclaimed restaurant; of course McDonald’s taste good from time to time, but that does not make it the better restaurant.

  3. Well, that’s a different matter. You just don’t agree that this album was better than Fionna Apple’s. But who wrote the songs is completely beside the point. I insist on that. An album for such a prize category must be evaluated without even know who the artist is. Let alone know who wrote it.
