I’ve had a GREAT few days. Seriously. They were GREAT. For some odd reason, I am extremely happy as of late. So darn HAPPY! I got a house, a lot of good friends, a healthy mother, a healthy father, three healthy cats, and so much else I can’t thank the world enough for. And to make today even better, I discovered a lot of new bands today thanks to me searching for the music of Dead Like Me and asking for what band is behind the awesome music of that extremely stylish and moving SNS bank commercial (with all the butterflies [note: music is muted somehow, weird Qt]).
As for Dead Like Me’s music, there are three songs that stand out because they are used throughout the series or on defyning moments:
Metisse - “Boom Boom Ba”: used all throughout the first season. Metisse is French, but the song is mostly in English, but it’s a really odd form of English. I can’t describe it; just listen. It’s so beautiful!
Pink Martini - “Que Sera”: a cover– but my god, what a good one. This song is played in the first, pilot episode. Kirsti is the little girl Georgia didn’t want to reap because she found it too cruel, to which Rube replies: “It is cruel. It’s cruel as she never know what life is really like, it’s cruel to miss out on love and pain and beauty. I’d say it to everyone in the world except for her. She won’t give a rat’s ass, she’ll be doing something different, that’s just the way it is.” Georgia then does take her soul after all, and when Kirsti sees her afterlife descend from the heaven (lights shaped like an amusement park), and she runs towards it, this song is played. It is really a beautiful version of “Que Sera”.
Squirrel Nut Zippers - “Hell”: a really weird song played throughout the series. I’m not really sure what to make of it yet, but I do like it.
And lastly, we come to the music of the SNS commercial. I today found out from who it is: it’s from Sufjan Stevens, a guy from Detroit, and the song is called “In The Devil’s Territory”. I like it that much, I’m going to buy the album. It really is that good.
If you download any of the songs mentioned, take either this one or the Metisse one. God, what a great day!
