An essay on Fiona Apple

June 23, 2006

I decided to ‘publish’ an essay on Fiona Apple I’ve written for a university course in English writing. You can get it here, in .doc and .odt format.

They fall under the same Creative Commons license as my blog, see underneath.

  1. Congratulations. Remarkable fluency and idiomatic writing for a second language. One would have to read very carefully to find any clues that this was not a native speaker. None of the usual clues are there; possibly one might be able to find some limitation of vocabulary if it were a longer passage - this is the usual higher level clue.

Have you read Conrad? He did it, writing in a second language, at the highest level, where all you can really say is that it is a distinctive voice, perhaps a bit too distinctive to be really native.

But it is hard to say what if anything makes Conrad more distinctive or less native than Hardy.

  2. Hey, thanks for the compliments. I did get the highest grade for the course, so there’s a reason I chose to publish this one online :).
