Dell went el-cheapo on me

November 16, 2006

I ordered a 512MB DDR2 SO-DIMM yesterday to upgrade my laptop to 1GB of RAM to better run Vista… Or so I thought.

Apparently, my Inspiron 6000 has 2 SO-DIMM slots. Dell went el-cheapo on me, filling both slots with 256MB :(.

  1. You should have researched first. Usually that’s how it is for laptops.

  2. Nonsense. I’ve owned several laptops, and this Dell is the first to have this. Compaqs, Apples, they never had it. Neither do my friends’ laptops.

  3. Contact your Dell representative and have it fixed. I also dont understand your comment you say you already had 516mb , you buy 516 more and you end up with two 256mb.

Someone stole 516mb from you , or there is a lot missing from your explanation.

  4. You don’t get it. I have ordered a 512MB RAM stick, but I opened my laptop last eve and found out both of its RAM slots are filled with 256, instead of just one with 512MB as they are supposed to.

  5. There’s an up side, which is that dual channel is enabled. I’m sure it helps the onboard video a lot.

It shouldn’t cost you that much to replace the two 256MB sticks with another 512MB one, should it?

I have to agree with Eugenia, in my experience this is not that uncommon. You should always check the memory slots (there’s software for that) before buying memory.

You are wrong. Most cheap-to-midrange are like that. Even my Powerbook was like that too. It came with 256 MBs of RAM, 128+128. When I upgrade the RAM, I THREW AWAY one of its 128 MBs. Other Apple laptop models were like that too.

    Cheap-ish Dells, HPs too.

  7. When you configured the laptop, weren’t you given a choice as to how many dimms you wanted, i.e. 2x 256 or 1x 512? I bet if you dig up your invoice you’ll see the former. 1 512 is much more expensive than 2 256’s, if they fix it for free I’ll be very surprised.

My laptop has dedicated video RAM (128 MB of it) for its Radeon x300.

If I am wrong, then how come I’ve never encountered it before? Look Eugenia, I have owned/serviced A LOT of laptops, and I’ve NEVER seen this sort of el-cheapo behaviour.

This laptop is a gift, so I wouldn’t know.
