It’s so simple and to the point
February 5, 2007Seriously. Apple’s marketing departement could learn a thing or two from the current Vista campaign Microsoft has launched. The guy says (in Dutch):
How many times do you experience something where only one word fits?
Discover Windows Vista.
It’s brilliant because it’s so simple and to the point. It appeals to a basic emotion, and instantly makes clear why you should try Vista: it will ‘wow’ you.
Compare this simple and direct ad to the somewhat arrogant and childish ‘Get a Mac‘ campaign from Apple. They were fun at first, but now they just make me cringe. Apple has such a good operating system, but instead of capitalising on that, they just ridicule their potential buyers. I have never seen an Apple ad which tries to sell OS X or the Mac on its own merits. Which is kind of sad.
Come to think of it, I have never seen an Apple ad, period. There has never been an Apple ad on Dutch television. Not even for the iPod.

You can see some of the iPod ads on the Apple site. I really like the iPod ads. But not the Mac ones.
The only Mac-vs-PC ad I like is the recent one where the PC tries to get a new web camera on top of his head. That was pretty funny, and to be honest, it was also to the point and realistic.

Wow.
Yeah, it’s a good commercial, but it will get old really fast. Wow.
“Wow,” 6 times in 30 seconds.
Maybe you see it 3 times a day. There’s 18. Wow.
Four days a week, that is 72 times. Wow.
I much prefer the Apple ads.
PC doesn’t speak Japanese.
PC freezes, then crashes, and falls down.
PC has a virus.
PC going in for the operation, and Mac sees his ass/arse.
Black Mac has a bigger hard drive and runs faster.
Wait, that was a parody.
PC gives Mac a report, while Mac gives PC a photo album with pictures.
PC gets stickered and has to listen to emo.
PC replaces mac guy with someone else.
Lest to forget the one Eugenia mentioned.
PC is paranoid of spyware, complete with trench coat and glasses with fake nose and mustache.
Those took me only a few minutes to recall.
At least they have variety, but the PC guy is more likable though.
Again, that Vista commercial will get old much faster.
Wow.

But this ad tries to sell Vista on its own merits?
The reason those PC vs Mac ads never air in the Netherlands is cuz they’ll never get approved by the ‘Reclame Code Commissie’ (Dutch authority on advertisement), their rules for comparing products in an ad are very strict. Wouldn’t've minded seeing their famous 1984 ad on Dutch TV tho when I was younger, love that ad.

I actually zap when I see this commercial, cause I think it’s rather annoying. And I didn’t know it was a commercial for Vista, lol.

This ad simply confirms what M$ tries to hide for years: Vista is just and only beautiful…
It will crash, it will contain backdoors, it will prevent you from doing what you want with your computer, it will be infested by viruses…it will be windows! Nothing less, maybe more…
