Overpopulation is not
April 17, 2007Overpopulation is not a problem.
The uneven distribution of resources is a problem. The way we live is a problem. The way we exploit our planet and flora/fauna is a problem. War is a problem. Guns are a problem. Mugabe is a problem. The United States are a problem. Putin is a problem. Religious extremists are a problem. Nuclear weapons are a problem. The unwillingness of politicians and oil companies to commit to hydrogen-based fuel cells is a problem. And so on.
But overpopulation is not. Get your priorities straight. Overpopulation is remedied by spreading resources equally and fighting poverty. Not by immoral and inhumane restrictions on how many children people can have.

Overpopulation is definitely not a problem today, but it might be in the near future, according to projections.

Get a job hippie ! The United States of America is a problem. OMG, grammar !
Don’t let Putin hear you say anything about him. If you want a bowl of Ricin Krispies for breakfast or a plate of polonium pasta to dine on for dinner, be my guest. At least with President Monkey Oil Jeebus Hearer, you know death is coming from the sky.
The unwillingness of politicians and oil companies to commit to hydrogen-based fuel cells is a problem
I that’s like asking a mugger to loan you some money. If hydrogen is coming as a fuel source, don’t expect oil companies to come on board until they find a way to turn oil into hydrogen or they commit themselves in any measure to hydrogen.
If you want to kill babies, then I don’t want to have anything to do with you.
I think everyone should be allowed one crazy tirade or two, and for someone like Eugenia, who is almost always outspoken, with a few notable exceptions, it’s just “par for the course.” I mean, as long as she doesn’t run for government office. With some really smart people, I seem to find a good amount of crazy beliefs. Idealized societal yearnings, wacky religions, transhumanism, strange diets, obsessive compulsiveness, and doom and gloom among other things. “Normal” people believe weird things too, but they are usually confined the fairy tales their parents never told them weren’t real, i.e. sacred religious texts. What really makes one person weird is going against what the majority of the population, so it’s all relative anyway. I mean milk, what’s up with that ?
I read a good book called How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens that convinced me that everyone believes irrational things.
Oh, and did you notice Eugenia disabled comments ? Looks like someone doesn’t like to be criticized.

I closed comments because the subject is closed for me. I provided some explanation and then I apologized in my blog and so that’s that and no more.

“Overpopulation is remedied by spreading resources equally and fighting poverty”
This is not how you remedy overpopulation because by definition, overpopulation means “fewer resources than required” and not “too many people”. Even if you equally spread resources around the world in some futuristic utopian world, if the population numbers are continuing to go up, there will be a time that there won’t be enough to “equally distribute”.

Wow, you really changed things around. I didn’t notice your changes, just Thom’s. I guess he didn’t notice either until around the time I posted, so he changed his response. The whole “wikiality” internet posts, if I may add a new definition, is rather disturbing.

You are not getting it.
The cause of overpopulation is poverty. If you fight poverty by equally distributing resources, you also fight overpopulation. It really is that simple.
In poor areas of this world, people gets lots of kids because they need to increase the chance that at least one of them will survive so that he or she can take care of the parents when they’re old (since there is no social security). If you increase the wealth in those areas, as well as allow them to create social security, then the need for having many, many children disappears.
This is a well-known cycle developing nations go through. In fact, even us western nations went through this cycle. And now, population figures in rich welfare states such as The Netherlands are fairly stable, while in the coming decades it will actually decrease, after which it will settle on a certain level. This is all well-known and tested information.
If you allow poor countries to get an equal share of the world’s resources, and help them in building up social security, overpopulation will not become a problem.

Actually Thom your wrong. The world resource are the same everywhere , the problem is the false economy and who own them and who control technology and the market.
Take Diamond and potato as example.
Diamond are not rare , so why is it they cost a fortune ? Because a few decided to control it and are making the market go as they wish …
The nonsense start when you see that most Diamond used to come from Africa , witch is about the poorest place on the planet , but guess what the population work in the mines , but others own the mines …
Potato is another extreme its subsidized in the US , to protect its economy and attack other economy , but there is no rarity in potato , but the makers are rejecting most of them due to standardized package ( weight , color , form ) , there are mountain of potato that go rotting because they are controlled by corporation who protect there own economic nonsense.
There is no real control of rarity but protected markets. You want a close by example and picture of this nonsense example of that go see the Bucket full of food that big store food chains trow out for esthetic reasons.
Overpopulation don’t exist , for overpopulation to exist we would have to have the entire planet covered , we don’t even cover 10% of the land mass …
We havent started living on 80% of the planet witch is water …
Overcrowding exist but thats because people are stupid.
And last but not least We can go to other planets and even create spaceship … Thats Gazillion time our own planet …
You see the problem are not really a problem , its just that it’s taught at an early age that screwing others is more profitable then helping others.
- The duty of the strong is to help the weak ! Not prey on the weak !
- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

“The uneven distribution of resources is a problem”
There comes a point at which the total population is so large that spreading limited resources equally makes little difference to an individual. The projected increase in the world population does not look encouraging …

I was just reading your coments and think that;
Whoever thinks that Overpopulation is not a problem is blind, or does not want to see this problem seriously enough..
This is the bigest problem that the planet faces today, I mean today as now maybe it is not too late to do something about it.
To thinnk that the global worming is an effect of the human activity on the planet and only by ho many people were till now, think of our fast growing polulation.
‘We are eating our planet alive.’
It will not survive for too long seems, as nonne is showing to be concerned anbout it… yet.
HUMAN BEINGS, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF THE MAMALS, BLINDED BY THEIR SUCCESS.
Maybe some of to will think I am too worried, I just think I am realistic!

Overpopulation doesn’t really exist right now. Overpopulation is not poverty, and is not too many people in one spot.
Thinking on a global scale, if you can distribute food to countries inflicted with poverty, then the Earth has the resources available to support the people. They are just not being utilized correctly.
Problems such as global warming are obviously enlarged by a larger population. But this doesn’t necessarily mean overpopulation, i.e. 2 people make more greenhouse gases than 1? The problem is the way things are being handled, as more efficient methods should be introduced at an affordable price.
The world can produce more to match the amount of people. As population increases, technology should also advance to create a greener and more efficient world

I can’t believe all the uneducated, illogical people who think human population is this “doomsday” problem. It is not a problem at all. If people were left to choose their own course in life we would all be fine. But as it is there is always some control freaks in the world who want to tell you what to do, say, think and believe.
Don’t drive a big car because it is bad for the environment.
Don’t eat meat it will give you a heart attack.
Don’t own guns to protect ones life/family/property because guns are dangerous and kill people.
I can go on and on with this type of nonsense. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are the corner stones of freedom. The people who founded the USA knew these concepts were at the core of what it is to be free. I believe there are too many people today who think these concepts are dated. When we get to that point tyranny will show its ugly head once again.
Think about this every time you read some information on how human behaviors are destroying the planet. These so called scientific studies are complete balderdash. These studies and their convenient conclusions are funded by governments and individuals who soul purpose is to take more freedoms away from individuals and place in their hands more control over peoples behaviors.
Study these accusations about us destroying the planet. Don’t be afraid of the consequences these studies say will happen if you don’t do such and such or give up X amount of freedom. Live your lives. Start families. The Family unit is the foundation of civilization.
Ask yourself what is better. To be under total control of some government entity telling you what to eat, drive, how many kids to have, believe, and think(all in the name of “saving the planet”). Or continue letting people choose their own course. Maybe this course of freedom leads to a planet wide population that cannot feed itself and people die of starvation. It is an easy choice however, better to die of starvation than to live at the foot of a tyrannical government.
LIBERTY OR DEATH!
