If you would only formalize the pain extraction process you went through in the install, perhaps we could have separate pain and wrong options set up for next time?

As for the camera; SLRs definitely force some consistency in there but aside from your not picking the 30-megapixel models, this is such a change-up from the thoroughly mutable (taking out IR filters, say) $35 camera review that it is disorienting. Likewise your choice of kit lens without adding more IR filters or a nice composite with basic extra IR protection, and red-bias / sky filters you can pop in. But for technique...perhaps you will be putting Wiimote accessories on it? WiFi? GPS tagging....? Third party BIOS?

The D40 will not autofocus any of Nikon's prime lenses. You made a good choice.

Yes, please,

1) Use the right names. Ubuntu is not, i repeat, NOT Debian.

2) dist-upgrade is not a supported upgrade method for Ubuntu. Read the docs. especially before complaining publicly.

Ubuntu != Debian kthx. If you screwed up by using an unsupported upgrade method in Ubuntu please don't drag Debian into it. It's slightly irresponsible to make your readers think Debian screwed something up when you aren't even using Debian.

Why not look at the Canon EOS 400D? I've got it and I think it's brilliant. I tend to find the quality of images has a whole lot more to do with the lens and skill than the body itself.

There are limitations to this theory, but it applies a great deal. I've seen photos from $200 point and click cameras that hands down are better than the $1000 semi-professional cameras, all due I think to skill and the environment it was shot, in this instance.

I too was in your boat about purchasing an SLR. I was torn between the Nikon D40 and the Canon Rebel XT. Both were great cameras, but I ended up getting the Canon because I've had a couple before, and their warranty support was pretty good. I don't think you could go wrong with either camera.

Yes, it was Ubuntu. I vaguely remember that flag, but hey, I am just too used to using dist-upgrade...

Thanks, though.

I read on OSNews that it was Ubuntu and not Debian? Don't dist-upgrade, it's not supported! Use update-manager, it has a special flag for development versions!
