Goth girl
February 25, 2008After our first class, Marco and I went down to the basement of the university’s main building, to the cafeteria which is located there. It’s noon, so the cafeteria is filled with students foraging for their favourite food (croissant naturel, in my case), and while Marco goes to the fridge to get some milk, I notice a goth-looking girl with a friend of hers scouring around. The goth chick was pretty. Quite pretty, actually.
Marco and I agreed: such a shame to see such prettiness wasted by all-black clothing, piercings, and more of that goth weirdness.
Look, I’m all for freedom of expression, and it’s not the goth style in and of itself that bothers me (we live in a free country, people should be allowed to wear whatever the hell they want), but that doesn’t mean I can’t say it’s a damn shame to see such prettiness hidden by that goth nonsense. Let’s fcuk the system, be non-conforming by dressing and acting like all the other millions of goths out there. Makes total sense.
When Marco and I were eating our lunch outside, I noticed the same girl sitting a few tables down, directed towards me. She had a beautiful smile.
What a waste, what a waste.

Maybe she likes to look how she likes to look, not how the majority of people would like her to look? Maybe she thinks getting her clothes where everyone gets their clothes is boring? Maybe she thinks looking like dozens of other girls at the university is a waste?

Alas, I find it such a waste when I see an exceptionally pretty girl hidden by all of that “preppy”/”hip hop”/etc. nonsense. Okay……..not really. I don’t find it a waste because everyone should be able to express themselves freely and in a way that they feel comfortable and beautiful.
Newsflash, not all “goths” dress as they do to be a “non-conformist” or to F the system (excluding the youngsters who are doing it just for shock value and attention). They dress and look as they do because that is what they find beautiful, and that is what they feel comfortable in. Thankfully, not everyone’s sense of beauty is the same, because it sure would be a boring world if it was. :)

That’s a pretty big assumption to make about someone that you haven’t even spoken with. Not to mention naive - since it’s a conclusion that appears to be based nothing more than a cynical stereotype.
The beautiful irony is that your “I’m not making a judgment, I’m just saying it’s wrong” post demonstrates the exact sort of attitudes that probably motivated the titular “Goth girl” to choose a contrarian fashion-statement in the first damn’d place.
The further irony is: maybe if more people realized that their own subjective aesthetic sensibilities are *not* actually universal, then most people might actually feel comfortable using their appearance for genuine self-expression (and there would probably be fewer people choosing aesthetics that are “contrary for sake of being contrary”).

It’s all fine, Wilma, all fine. Just as you can dress whatever way you want, I can express my opinion on that whenever I want :). And let’s be clear here - this has NOTHING to do with personality. I’m just talking about the outside, not the inside - I don’t make judgements on personality and the inner side based on people’s clothes.
Just so you know :).

ok first of all some guys love the dark look on girls. They see a pretty goth and want her as she is. Im a rocker and i say let the gothic guys have some pretty goth girls you cant keep all girls of the world caged to your design of life if it was that way the gothic boys would be on there own and for the rockers aka me we would have nothing good to look at and also she could be looking back at you and saying the same thing.

well said irony is my name though i do not believe this here simpleton will comprehend what you have said and that in itself is a waste.
As a self proclaimed goth myself i think the subculture is brilliant ,intellectual ,and deply rooted in antiquity.
it would be reasonable if the female cakced on too much cosmetics or had poor taste ..but gothic definatly deviates from the accepted asthetic appeal and that should not be ridiculed or seen as a waste.
i am not attempting to give you a good verbal tongue lashing but would liek you to reconsider the ere you have made.
gothic is multifaceted and just as all subcultures that take a non conformist stance such as punk the movement catches on and eneryone within it may appear as a clone but…..if you werent as naive as irony is my name pointed out you would have known that there are numerous groups within the subculture and even then there is personal preference and originality….
so there if you cannot fathom this ask a comrade to translate or you can never claim you are openminded…
