One key feature for most users was a sense of community. Even though blogging is an inherently one-to-many activity, most readers felt a personal connection to the author. This could foster the feeling that the reader belonged to the community even in the absence of participation, and led those who did participate via comments to agonize over their content.

Hi, I’m Thom Arvid Holwerda, born on 1 December 1984. I have two brothers I never talk about, because their (in)actions severely damaged the connection I had with them - most likely beyond repair. And I don’t even care. My mother suffered from breast cancer a few years ago, which taught me a serious lesson about mortality. I have a lot of friends whom I appreciate and love dearly. I vehemently oppose the death penalty, legalised guns, and intolerance. The principle of unconditional equality is one of the two most important values - together with unconditional loyalty to the people I care about.

I am superawesome, incredibly smart, incomprehensibly funny, and NOT AT ALL ARROGANT.

Now, CONNECT GODDAMNIT.

  1. Darn, you’re two years younger than me :D I thought you’d be older :O Why? Because you always seem to have something interesting to say…I too have thought about a blog but I dumped the idea because I realized I just have nothing to say which anyone else would care to read..

  7. Hi Thom
I’m sorry you dont feel appreciated. I’ve enjoyed reading OS news and your blog, in part because you like the same TV i did, in the way of those slightly left field US shows like Wonderfalls and Dead like Me. Probably Reaper too. (Over in the UK we are getting Pushing Daisies starting on Saturday, but it is on one of the traditional networks and is therefore almost guaranteed to suck. On another irrelevent note the Independent newspaper has a film competition Eugenia might be interested in. Or not. You know. Probably not - with the internet you tend to assume if someones interested they already know )

Anyhow, I think you sound like a clever, decent person. The thing is though, as a friend of mine used to say ‘Funny beats true’, and she was right (Fake Steve vs Ian Murdoch? Anyone?) You’re lucky, you’re funny. Me, not so good. Someone once asked me to talk about humour. I said it was a bad smell from the middle ages. Nobody laughed. Now I’m willing to concede the Black Death isn’t really a laughing matter, but it’s not like it happened to anyones granny or anything, So I went home and repeated it to my mum. Turned out it was a joke not even a mother could love…

    Anyway, good luck with Fiona.

Isn’t it funny how the internet can mislead a person :)

No, you’re right. Thom is a clever, decent person. Sometimes too clever and sometimes not so decent. But that’s why we love him. And connect with him.
