  1. Ah…why on earth would the Dutch care about American elections? I mean, any more than I care who gets elected mayor of Rotterdam?

    This really isn’t your problem.

  2. The_Yig, you are either ignorant or an idiot, or both. It is everyone’s problem, as it is for every American, exactly because the last thing the planet needs is another Bush who has initiated wars against innocent countries. We don’t care what the American President will do about your American taxes, but we do care about international politics because we are all “international” in one way or another and we could be the target one day.

  3. Too bad what we think doesn’t really count in the election.

  4. Am I the only one bothered by the way Obama is trying to hide the fact that he’s reading from a board/autocue?
    I mean, come on! [/Jimmy Volmer-mode]

If you believe the mayor of Rotterdam has the same amount of power and importance as the president of the US than you have a rather warped view on the concept of power.

Sadly enough, it is. It really shouldn’t be, but sadly, European leaders, with the Dutch politicians up front, have turned sucking America’s balls into a sport, so yeah, we kinda have to worry about who’s balls they’re sucking.

  6. And if Hillary was co-running with Obama, America could provide a more robust variety of flesh for the international mouth.

The relative power between the two positions is irrelevant as to which elections ought to concern you. A polar bear is far more dangerous than a scorpion in almost every respect, but I worry more about the latter when hiking around California.

I am curious as to why Dutch politicians would be so eager to please American policymakers.

In the area of foreign policy, for example, they could choose (with little consequence) to withdraw all of their troops from Afghanistan, as they did in Iraq, or they could’ve not gone at all. It seems to have worked for the Germans.

I can’t think of anything else a US chief executive could do that would affect the average Dutchman, save for macroeconomic things like strengthening the currency. A big-city mayor, OTOH, has lots of ways to directly influence the people living near him, even if they aren’t his constituents.

  8. @The_Yig - you need to take off those blinkers. Bush has proven you are wrong by dragging the world into a pointless war. Various levels have resisted, but the economy is going to pot and, aside from the housing crisis caused by sub prime mortgages, this mainly revolves around oil prices. If Obama, or whoever gets in to power, doesn’t straighten out US foreign policy, the world will crash.

  9. American elections are only meaningful as a source of fun. Heheh.
Now of course a Ralph Nader - Ron Paul ticket would have been much preferred, but since you guys are all so excited about Mr Obama, I guess I should rest my case.
If you believe Obama stands even the slightest chance of making a real change in the US, I gladly help you hope it.
