Disturbia

October 7, 2008

I bought two new albums last Sunday. The first won’t surprise many who know my taste in music (women! Women! Women!). I bought Amy Macdonald’s successful debut album “This Is The Life”.

The second one might be a bit of a puzzler to most of my friends - I bought Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded”. I basicaly liked every single she put out there (except for the dreadfully corny “Hate That I Love You”), but what really dragged me kicking and screaming into buying the album is her latest smash hit single, “Disturbia”. Not only is this an awesome song, it also has one the coolest videos I’ve seen in a long time.

Both albums are welcome additions to my collection, and interestingly, almost as different from one another as two albums can be. Definitely recommended.

Just wanted to share.

Barbie girl

October 3, 2008

I’m a barbie girl, in a barbie world… Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!

That pretty much sums up my view on Palin’s performance in the debate this night. I watched the entire debate (just as I did with the first presidential debate), and I must say, it was rather interesting. To us Europeans, both Palin (that’s the MILF with the knocked up daughter, right?) and Biden (who?) are relatively unknown, creating a more or less level playing field from our perspective.

Palin did well. But let’s face it, it was pretty much impossible for Palin to underachieve. However, she was kind of like the interiors of most American cars; sure, it looks great on photos, but you know that it’s all just cheap plastics we Europeans wouldn’t even make disposable cutlery out of.

Biden did well too, but from where we’re standing, it was pretty much impossible for him to underachieve either. He did sound an awful lot like a broken record player, and he had a fetish for lists and voting records, but he had a few really good moments.

Sadly, both tickets are pro-apartheid, and pro-Israel. Both tickets (yes, including Obama) oppose gay marriage, and therefore contradict the Founding Fathers by blatantly promoting inequality. In addition, both tickets have this unhealthy obsession with the rogue state of Israel, a country that ignores the UN and the anti nuclear proliferation treaty. I’m not saying that Israel is any better or worse than its neighbours, but the special treatment it receives, based on a misplaced spoon-fed sense of guilt, is simply not something that that country deserves.

America deserves better than either of these two sides of the coin, but you folks across the big wet thingie will have to make do. I’m just glad I’m not going to be in that voting booth.

I mean, our voting booth is pretty much similar, just with more choices between nothing. And more is better, right?

Lesbian spank inferno

October 2, 2008

Continuing my impromptu series on good comedy, here’s another one. Steve in Coupling, with his legendary rant about naked women. The backstory here is that in the days leading up to this dinner party, Susan (the blonde across the table), found one of Steve’s lesbian porn videos (”Lesbian Spank Inferno”, here come the search engines!). He’s forced into detailing the “plot” of the porn video during the party.

Coupling is definitely worth your time, one of the best comedy series of all times. It’s kind of like Friends, but then without the repetitiveness, annoying Americans, worn-out New York backdrop, and lame stand-up comedy jokes. Coupling is a series where there really aren’t any individual, one-line jokes - everything depends on one another. Finding a suitable scene to demonstrate the type of complex humour generally used in Coupling is difficult, but this one is pretty decent.

The series makes extensive use of split-screen, time lapse, and different people speaking about the same events but from different angles (men vs. women, mostly). The characters in coupling are not meant to reflect real people - Susan and Steve could be real, but the other characters are stylised extremes of the male and female psyches.

It’s an extremely innovative show, and definitely worth your time.
