Star Trek

November 18, 2008

So, the trailer (the 2nd one) to the new Star Trek film is out.

And it seems like they finally got the message. It’s Star Trek Jim, but not as we know it (please shoot me now).

The trailer shows an atmosphere that seems to do away completely with the past, and this is a very, very good thing. From what this small preview tells us, they’ve been looking closely at the best science fiction show ever: Battlestar Galactica (the new one). BSG runs circles around all Star Trek series and films combined. The new Star Trek film seems darker, less sterile - more like BSG.

I hope this can usher in a new beginning for the franchise. Forget those so-called die-hard Trek fans, they’re idiots who have no idea whatsoever about what makes good television and what doesn’t. People don’t buy the idealistic we’re-all-gonna-be-okay-and-lovey-dovey crap from the earlier series anymore - why do you think Deep Space Nine is held in such high regard by non-Trekkies? Exactly - because it made the first baby steps away from this ridiculously perfect Federation nonsense, and showed us a future more fitting with human nature, something we can more relate to: war, genocide, slavery, oppression.

Let’s hope that the new Star Trek film will be hated as much as possible by die-hard Trek fans. The more they hate it, the better it will be.

This looks more like a prequel to TOS (although not aimed strictly at the hardcore fans) - while the new BSG basically ignores everything from the original series other than the basic premise and character names (not that that’s a bad thing, of course).

Just judging from the trailer, it looks like there’s much more reverence for the source material than we ever saw from Enterprise. I’m no hardcore fan, but the familiar little touches in the trailer made me smile - E.g., the TOS-style uniforms (though updated to look like uniforms instead of pajamas) and shuttlecraft.

  2. I’m really looking forward to it. I love startrek :P

However, I really don’t like BSG. I don’t get everyones obsession. It’s a fricken space soap opera. Its just way too drama-y for my tastes. I want a scifi epic, not soap. There is a distinction :P

OK, now you can show me the error in my ways ;)

  3. I don’t rate high BSG for the same reason, too much drama/soap. The handful good episodes of ST:TNG, and Lost, are my favorite scifi shows (btw, the writers said that season 5 of Lost will be much more “science fiction-y” — their words).

  4. For once, Eugenia and I agree - the BSG remake is overrated. It’s certainly better than the original and it’s had some great moments, but it’s also really hard to take it seriously at times. The 2nd season finale and the first half of the third season were one giant exercise in jumping the shark - seriously, what’s the point of doing a “One year later…” jump when they just hit the reset button a few episodes later?

I do still find it enjoyable, but for my money B5 still blows it out of the water.
