Galactica

January 31, 2009

Yesterday’s Battlestar Galactica episode?

The best thing I’ve ever seen on TV. There’s no debate as far as I’m concerned: BSG is better than every other television series ever made. The mutiny, the treason, the pain it causes to see Adama being betrayed by his own men. Some find the mutiny hard to believe (trained soldiers? Mutiny against the admiral?) but let me ask you this: would the Jewish people, in the middle of the Holocaust, suddenly join forces with the Nazis? Because that’s the only fitting analogue in our own history.

Of course not. They’d rebel - necessity or not - they would rebel. The mutiny is 100% understandable and very, very believable. I would have found it idiotic if the alliance with the Cylons had been accepted without a fight. They just slaughtered 50 billion people!

Dear baby Jesus, I just can’t believe people prefer Lost or Heroes over BSG. They really need a brain check.

Thick

Whether you hook up your TV via digital connections, analog connections, or both, you are unlikely to detect any difference in picture quality between a cable with a moderate price and a luxury brand. The only difference you’re likely to notice is how the cable looks behind your TV.

It didn’t take me a test to figure that obviousness out. My entire audio/video/television system is digitally connected via optical audio cables and HDMI, and I’ve always specifically told the sales people to more or less shove their nonsense up their asses and give me the cheapest HDMI/optical cables they had in stock. I told them the same thing when I was hooking up my parents’ brand new A/V/TV equipment - cut the crap, and give me your cheapest cables. I’m not going to discuss this with you salespeople, because you’re wrong.

The only justifiable reason to pay 130 EUR for a HDMI cable is that the cable overall is sturdier, and will last longer. However, for picture and audio quality, it doesn’t make a single goddamn difference, and if you still claim that it does, you’re thick and a thief of your own wallet (as we Dutch say).

Kind of like all that UFO nonsense. I saw one, so they must be real! No, let’s just follow Occam’s Razor, and take the simpler explanation: you’re just an idiot.

GNOME

January 28, 2009

I find it rather pathetic that the only entry on Planet GNOME so far regarding KDE 4.2 is some guy complaining about the release announcement using Flash for the screencasts. From a project that embraces such a controversial technology like Mono.

Jealous much?

Sweet

Sometimes, the sweetest things come from people you really don’t expect it from.

I had a nice weekend.

Alicia

January 21, 2009

So, I figured I’d do another playthrough in Fallout 3. During my first playthrough, I pretty much covered the entire wasteland, finished every quest, and found most of the rare items. My character, Fiona, was stuck at the level cap, and practically invincible.

I created a new character, named her Alicia, and it was my goal to finish the game with a positive karma level.

As it turns out, starting a new character automatically deletes the old one. Maybe I missed the prompt, but still, this is pretty bad game design. I’m also pretty pissed off as I specifically kept a savegame for Fiona around so I could use her to play the downloadable content packs coming out this year.

This pretty much sucks balls. Alicia is nice and all, but I played with Fiona for well over 150 hours. Goddamnit.

Deserve

January 20, 2009

Now that the Bush era is finally behind us, let me express my hope that Obama will be able to restore the image of America around the world, that he will return the United States to a policy of instilling freedom, liberty, and equality not through violence and oppression, but through diplomacy, respect, and tolerance. I hope that the US will return to a policy where violence is a last resort, a means to protect people whose rights are denied - instead of violence being merely an offensive tool to increase the wealth of the United States.

Most of all, however, I hope that Obama will be capable of improving the living standards of ordinary Americans, and improving freedom, liberty, and equality within US borders. I hope that he will be able to lay the foundations that will one day provide true legal equality for all minorities in the US - black, Hispanic, homosexuals - something we have enjoyed for a few years already.

It’s interesting to see the immense amount of attention European media are giving to President Obama. The entire inauguration was broadcast live on Dutch TV, and the media have been filled to the brim with stories on Obama. I think it is a signal that we Europeans are craving for a strong figure as well, that we also want politicians with the ability to unite us, instead of dividing us. What do we have to show for ourselves? That midget in France? The grey sack of salt in Germany? The megalomaniac corrupt botox-user in Italy? That colourless accountant in Britain? Our very own bland and empty Harry Potter? Are those the kind of leaders that Europe deserves?

The past 8 years Europe had the opportunity to fill the void that Bush had left. We had the opportunity to become that shining beacon of civility, equality, and freedom. We had the opportunity to rise above petty differences, politics, and religion and work together to provide peaceful solutions for conflicts around the world.

Instead, we joined Bush in his black/white thinking. We joined him in his west vs. east divide. We joined him in his unlawful and aggressive wars. We joined him in his unsubstantiated support for rogue state Israel. We made all the mistakes that Bush made, and now we are trying very hard to make it seem as if we were against him all the time. We’re pathetic.

Europe needs a figure like Obama. Someone who can unite all the different people of Europe behind one common goal, one vision, one future.

Sadly, we seem to find it much more important whether Muslim women are allowed to wear a headscarf in public or not.

Like I said, we are pathetic. And as always, a people gets the government it deserves. We Europeans have the leaders we deserve.

Sacred

January 18, 2009

Why I’m waiting, with baited breath, for Sacred II: Fallen Angel for the XBox 360.

If you choose to play the game with each character, playing each Light or Shadow path, each with around a 180 quests, as well as all of the 650-plus side quests, you should be done some time around 2012. If there’s an achievement for 100% completion, it better be worth like a million points.

Dude, like, totally.

Small

January 17, 2009

Several small things.

I have a new main desktop computer, built it myself from hand-picked parts. AMD Phenom X4 quad-core processor (4x2.2Ghz), 4GB of gaming RAM from Geil (whatever the hell gaming RAM means), and a fancy motherboard that can connect the on-board graphics chip to a discrete one via SLI. Also bought a red Asus case and a power supply picked because it was silent. It’s a blazing-fast machine now, and I’m really happy with it.

It set me back a mere 320 EUR. I forgot to order cooling paste, so I quickly drove to town to buy a tube of the stuff, and as I walked by the Apple store and noticed the prices, I couldn’t help but chuckle.

I also have a new job. I can’t say much about it, but it’s nothing fancy. I’m quite happy with it, in any case. This new job does mean more time for OSNews, which is always a good thing.

I bought This Is Alphabeat today, Alphabeat’s debut album. Great stuff.

Last night’s new Battlestar Galactica episode kicked major ass. Awesome stuff.

That will be all.

LEGACY

January 14, 2009

Only one month left! February 17th, 2009 - the official release date for Dead Like Me: Life After Death. Yes, that’s the Dead Like Me film.

I’m extremely excited - but scared at the same time. Even though I vowed never to become a raving lunatic fanboy of anything (except Fiona, that’s a genetic issue), I did become one when it comes to Dead Like Me. I’m afraid that they got a tiny little insignificant detail wrong, and I’ll be all like THEY PISSED ALL OVER THE LEGACY.

On a related note, coming Friday is another big day in television: Battlestar Galactica returns! The second half of the fourth and final season will start airing Friday, and I’m very excited, as I’m a huge BSG fan. If the BSG writers maintain the level of quality the show has demonstrated over its 3.5 seasons so far, and end the show satisfactory, I will place it above Dead Like Me as my favourite television show of all time.

And then the world will end.

Green

January 6, 2009

I’m not a Green Day fan, but for some reason, those guys have a couple of songs that really stick with you.

One that I particularly like is “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”. The simplicity of the sound is striking, and the lyrics are short, but quite powerful, and recognisable to just about anyone in one way or another.
