Epic zombie FAIL

March 14, 2009

In the new Resident Evil game, number 5 already, zombies can use guns.

That’s what we call an epic zombie fail. A zombie that can wield weapons is just a normal man with a dirty face.

You’d think that by now people know how to make a zombie. A zombie game isn’t difficult because of gunfire, a zombie game is difficult because there are ten billion million of them all coming your way. That’s why Left 4 Dead is such a great game.

  1. I feel such a geek writing this, but as far as I understood it the zombies in Resident Evil are not technically zombies in the undead-sense. There seems to be two type of zombie accepted in modern day culture.

Firstly there are the traditional undead zombies which can be seen in films such as George A Romero’s films, for example, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead and are written about in Robert Kirkman’s excellent The Walking Dead graphic novels.

Then there are the second types of “zombies”, which are not traditional undead creatures, instead they are infected with viruses. The zombies from Danny Boyle’s film 28 Days Later and the sequel 28 Weeks Later (not directed by Danny Boyle I might add), and zombies from Resident Evil are infected with viruses.

Indeed there are a host of viruses in Resident Evil, which can be read about here. The Tyrant virus is the virus that has the ability to animate dead tissue.

While I agree that its a stretch to imagine a traditional undead zombie being able to use a gun, even George A Romero leaves open the posibility of undead zombies being able to perform simple tasks, such as opening a door using a door handle, which in theory leaves the posibility of a virus-animated zombie being able to use a gun.

Personally, I think zombies (both undead and virus) shouldn’t be able to use equipment of any kind, and the idea of a zombie should bring the mind the idea of a human stripped of their soul, only able to do instictive tasks such as following noise and eating without conscious thought as to what the noise is and what or who they are eating, basic instictive actions which all humans still have to do and are suppressed or modified according to modern society.

  2. I haven’t played RE5 yet (it’s supposedly just “RE4 in Africa”) but they aren’t technically zombies. In RE4, you had the Los Plagas which were essentially taking control of people and making them act weird. If I’ve read correctly, it is a similar case here. Considering that Ada takes the sample at the end of RE4, it would be safe to assume that this would happen in other places in the world sometime soon.

As for Wesker, hopefully he stays dead this time.
