Here in Texas, USA there is a not-insignificant chance that the perpetrators would have been shot by the home/trailer owners when they broke in. Gun ownership is legal here (for now, who knows in a few Obama-years?) if you have a clean background. Many people use them for sport as well as home defense. And concealed carry of handguns with a license is allowed. I don't know if our system is better or not, but as long as criminals can get guns, I'd like to be able to be on a level playing field with them at least.
