Again, IV

March 24, 2009

People aren’t angry because it had religion, people are angry because just saying “God did it!” is such a completely lame answer. I was a fan from the start, to the end, still am, the religion part never bothered me.

It amuses me when elitists say stuff like “sorry it’s above your level of understanding” considering the people most likely to use “God did it!” IRL are creationists and the like — people totally renown for their intellectual prowess.

Sorry, “God did it!” isn’t above anyones level of understanding.

What is the difference between:

“A higher being did it” (he was not called god).

or:

“Aliens did it” (the general way scifi works)

Both are equally ridiculous, you see, but that’s science fiction for you. I find it endlessly amusing that scifi fans have NO qualms whatsoever about accepting nonsense like time travel, teleportation, aliens that all look like humans, and so on - but have quarrels with accepting “a” supreme being (NOT god, as they specifically said he did not want to be called that) that toys with our lives. Did you complain when Q (essentially gods) came onto Star Trek?

The fact of the matter is that I personally do not find if far-fetched at all to imagine that there are beings far beyond our comprehension, that see us as mere insects to pull legs out of, much like the neighbour kid who uses a magnifying glass to burn ants.

  1. I’m honored I made your blog. :-D

They are both completely ridiculous, you’ll find no arguments from me there. I actually hate Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. for the reasons you list.

I make an exception for DS9. the Treknobabble and all the other stuff is still completely retarded, but the story is great, if I was simply knee-jerking against higher beings, surely I’d have a problem with DS9, which easily tops BSG in religion and general spiritual mumbo-jumbo. But I don’t. Still sits at #2 in my Top 5.

  2. “A higher being did it” (he was not called god).

Yes, he was. Many, many, many times in the series.

  3. Yes, he was. Many, many, many times in the series.

See the comment in my other story.

“Eugenia, no one said ANYthing about it being “god”. That’s the interpretation WE as humans attached to it, because we don’t understand it. The humans in the series did the same thing.

There is no evidence either way that the entity that governed this all is “god” as we understand it in the Christian/Jewish/Muslim sense - or something else altogether. It’s obvious that we as humans call it “god”, because we actually don’t understand it. The discussion we’re all having underlines that point.

I present the example of the neighbour kid burning ants with a magnifying glass, or pulling out the legs of the spider. Try to position yourself in the position of the ant or the spider - do they have a clue what they’re dealing with?

Now envision us humans as the ants and the spiders. There are things up there using their magnifying glass to burn us, their pliers to pull out our legs. however, because we simply can’t comprehend that idea - like the ants and the spiders can’t comprehend the neighbour kid.”

  4. I replied to your other story. As I said yesterday, you didn’t have to make brand new posts about the same thing, which essentially trashes our replies as future readers won’t get the full picture. I find no point replying here anymore.

  5. Or as my wife puts it: Technically God is an alien.
    (She’s catholic, btw)
