Balls of yarn

March 30, 2009

As I was strolling through big city Alkmaar today, buying music and video games, I spotted two young girls holding hands, being all lesbian.

I immediately conjured up images of them overcoming fear and prejudice, and the confusion about their sexuality, only to find each other and living happily ever after. They were so cute together.

I wanted to hug them, pet them, throw balls of yarn at them, but figured that would probably be fround upon.

  1. Gotta say, I got a good laugh from the term ‘being all lesbian’ and to be honest I am not sure why. I am gonna go with the uncomfortable, albeit seemingly unintentional condescending undercurrents throughout the post made any nugget of humour all the more appealing, as to avoid the realization that with posts like these, however well intentioned, there is still a chasm existing between the straight world and the gay world.

I was talking to a gay friend of mine, about the idea of ‘coming out’ and we had a good discussion about it. I took the side of verbally coming out to the world, as a way to own your sexuality, and to own yourself really. She though, thought that the whole idea of coming out works to create a ‘them’ status for homosexuals. When I started dating my girlfriend, I did not sit down with my parents, tell them that I have given it a lot of thought, and discovered then that I was a straight male. So why should my lesbian friend have to go through those paces? I think what I am getting at is even noticing them as an oddity, even if they are only odd because of their strength and love, not because they are different, but the chasm still exists.

  2. Wait. You saw two cute lesbians and that whas what you thought about? You truly are a decent man, Thom. If it would’ve been me or Sjaak, this blog posting would’ve come out very different…
