SUSE 10.0

October 11, 2005

I just installed and set-up SUSE 10. This distro is the leader in slickness- completely graphical boot, and one that is completely integrated, so the various bootscreens (System, KDE) are all alike. Very slick. KDE 3.4 is of course taking 7 days to be set up correctly, but oh well, KDE is KDE. One thing that KDE has that GNOME lacks: decent tools to adjust and tweak window behaviour, so I can set the window behaviour as in BeOS. GNOME is heavily lacking in this area.

Also, Kpilot actually works! No cli action required! Wow, how modern!

And, KDE also beats the crap out of GNOME when it comes to the Zipdisk Mount Error Dialog! Here’s KDE’s version:

Seriously now, SUSE/KDE offers some vital functionality that Ubuntu/GNOME simply cannot offer me; of course KDE introduces about ten million other annoyences, but somehow I think I might take them for granted, seeing KDE offers decent window management, and normal Palm support. Only time will tell.

New Zipdisk mount error dialog

September 27, 2005

Just apt-get dist-upgraded into Breezy, and it finally works. About time. Anyway, Gnome 2.12 is really nice, Beagle is working marvellously, and as you can see, I also encountered the new Zipdisk mount error dialog! The GNOME team delivered on their promise to make the Zipdisk mount error dialog even more user-friendly and HIG-compliant. Since the previous version didn’t contain any useful info anyway, they this time decided to discard of the info alltogether.

In GNOME 2.14, the Zipdisk mount error dialog will be removed completely, and replaced by a more user-friendly and more HIG-compliant PC speaker beep, and for Topaz, they plan to replace the PC speaker beep by a mallet that comes falling from the sky on top of your head.

Wiki but then fun

Just sumbled upon this… Priceless! This must be the best quote:

Where KDE policy is “if you find an empty space during one second, add an useless feature or something very very irritating. The icon must be shiny and rotating”, the Gnome policy is trully the opposite : “if you find a feature, it’s not user friendly so remove it”.

Following this policy, Gnome is the only piece of software with less feature every release.

They do a really good KDE item too:

In the beginning there was a freak keyboard malfunction, from excessive typing of the word cool resulting in damage to the to the letter ‘c’. On the third day it was proclaimed henceforth the letter ‘k’ would forever be used instead.

And they even have an item on OSNews!!

OSNews is a collaborative effort (much like a Wiki) in which operating system fans congregate to wage war on any other computing technology. Having started in the 1950s in Slashdot, OSNews pioneered the idea that the widget styles of KDE and Gnome could be worthy of a 500-comment discussion.

Truth can hurt, guys and gals.
